A question of Diamonds

Back again..
I am a new player and have used most of my diamonds for upgrades when I first started my Elven city not realizing how rare they are. I could not find any info in the Forums about how diamonds work and I still can't find how we go about getting more, only that we can purchase them. Is this the only way possible.. really? Do we need them or can I progress through with just the quests, relics and gold?

You can certainly progress through relying on the quests, Diamonds simply speed up that process.
