If it's working, you can type /w playername message and more message and even more and only they will see it. If there is a space in their name, you need to put quotes around it.

In many games there are extensive emotes available like "/wave playername" triggering a chat message (so-and-so waves at you). Some games these will run to hundreds of possibilities including waving, bowing, dancing, cursing (as in "so-and-so-calls down the wrath of the gods upon you"), etc.
