Best time to use Vitality surge

I am guessing in order to maximize the use of the vitality surge one would use it on a complete loss of squad in the 6th round of your last province in the tournament or maybe a complete loss at the spire top? Any number crunchers out there to confirm this?

Makes sense
Spire or tournament end for different reasons- spire between rounds 2&3 if you are going to lose can potentially save you 5 oversized stacks.
Tournament depending on how deep you go can save a lot.

I would imagine the best way to gauge this is to look at the diamond numbers that it would cost to replace lost troops, something I have ignored for years. That should tip you off if spire or tournament is best.

I always look at the diamond numbers to gauge my losses. It is an easy and quick way to see if I can sustain the losses I am taking at any point looking forward. Not assuming differently, Inno would calculate diamond costs the same way across events and locations as a battle loss is still a battle loss.

The value of the troops themself is pretty insignificant IMO. Even if a fight high in the spire or deep into the tournament goes badly, I can replace troop losses relatively quickly with a few hours of troop production from my 3 military buildings. To me the primary value of Vitality Surge is being able to replenish troops in the middle of multi-wave spire encounters. Especially if you are in a situation where you have to select troops which will be good in wave 2 and wave 3 but they are not quite as good for wave 1. So they take heavy losses right away.

I concur @Henroo that the troops are relatively insignificant and replace them quickly also. Yet at the same time, buy just seeing the cost in diamonds to replace the troops just lost, I can judge going forward that the losses will be even greater. At some point we all say, "This is as far as I go for now." The diamond cost for me is how I judge that point.
