Building sizes with upgrades

First I wan't to say, this is not a complaint, I'm just curious about something.

I've noticed something when upgrading my buildings. Several times, even when I have the space I won't be able to upgrade a building. It will show up that I don't have enough space for it. So I have to move it so one specific side is open. This can be something as simple as changing the side of the street it's own. But when I move it to the spot I wanted it fits perfectly.

I was just wondering if it's a bug or if it was designed that way?

It's designed that way. Buildings need space in front and to their right (your left) side to expand. They won't expand to the rear or to their left.

I've also had a building display red in a space it should fit. Often moving the cursor around a bit and then back, fixes the problem.
