can you choose another race when you start a new world

the title is the question i am to afraid to start another world because i am thinking that i will have to play human no matter what please answer whether i have to do that or not it would be appreciated.

You not only CAN, but you probably should select the other race in your second city.

The buildings are oriented differently, and the upgrade breakpoints are not the same, so it's a very different experience.

There's also a rumor that humans are better fighters but, from my experience with both races, that's just another variation on breakpoints.
