Cliff buildings

Hello, for some time I've been wondering about the palaces in the cliff side. I see many advanced players with them, but the cursor does not provide any info on them. How does one get those and what benefits do they provide? Thank you for any help with this question

Those start popping up when you build the Ancient Wonder that corresponds with them. They don't provide any tangible additional benefit to your city, but they're nice to look at.

Adding to what Azkaban said, you can look under Ancient Wonders in the Wiki and see which ones give the cliff backdrop. The others give special in-game avatars you can use and they're listed, too.
