Collecting orbs

If anyone is good at math please provide actual numbers for this quandary. Each week we get 4 orbs. Let's say there is a 75 25 chance it will not break and I think the odds are that it will mosy likely break but say 75 25so every week you get 1 solid and three broken. Seems it would takes months and months to unlock 1 level and there are 35 levels so are they saying it will take a decade to finish and the game will outlive me?

You only get 3 Orbs per week, one from the main boss for each floor. Not sure where you figured it was 4.

And most calculations on Discord are saying, with average luck, it is around 5 years to get it to level 35. This is partly because the higher levels will require more than 9 placed Orbs to level it up. These numbers are also based on Inno not giving us any extra sources for Orbs, though that will likely eventually change.

I don't have a record of the quest rewards, but there is a quest line related to the spire changes, and some of those quests, if I recall correctly, awarded orbs. In both of my cities, I am currently only doing the first map of the spire (defeating the first boss) so I'm only getting 1 orb per week, but I've already placed the Vestige in both cities, and one of them is getting close to level 2. So the quest rewards will help players get to level 1 reasonably quickly, unless you are very unlucky.

Also, chance of breaking goes up as the number of remaining slots goes down, so the first ~5 slots or so has a much higher chance of not breaking.

All that to say, I guess it won't take long to get level 1, and maybe even level 5 won't be too bad. But of course it will get worse and fully leveling it will likely take a long time.

The last 14 orbs have shattered. I have combined 10 shattered orbs to fill one spot. I think it will be next week now, as i have finished the Spire for this week. I need one more spot to be filled.

Just musing here but I have the exact same Orb placement in both of the worlds I play in. Every week is a mirror image of the other. Not so with anyone else I've been in contact with. My AM just lamented the same as sputnik and has yet to even place it. I'm thinking that each placement comes with a stored upgrade program with a specific upgrade pattern through each level. I think that you'd likely get all of the scenarios at some point throughout the upgrade life, just in different weeks.

3 orbs per week. If the orb wheel fills the same as the rune wheel then it takes 10 orbs to fill the bar and if you start with a filled orb bar you get the first orb wheel slot filled for free. After that it takes around 17 more orbs to fill the rune wheel, so, again, if the math is the same, it should take about 27 total orbs to fill the wheel...at 3 a week, that's 9 weeks of topping the spire. 9x34 = 306 weeks = 5.8 years. So that's about right.

This is, as stated, assuming the probabilities of the orbs breaking is the same as used in the rune shards. (BTW a "shard" is a broken piece of pottery, thus a "broken rune shard" is a "broken, broken piece of pottery?" LOL)

For 9 slots (levels 1-5) the median is 18; the average is close to 19 (a fair number will do it in 27). For each section of five levels thereafter the number of slots increases by 1; so 10 slots to fill for levels 6-10 and 15 slots to fill for levels 31-35.

After having built and upgraded multiple Vestiges now, I got the impression that it makes sense not to always use the orbs you win straight away.

Intuitively, I would say that the fewer orbs there are in the orb circle, the higher the chance that you can use orbs without them breaking.
I like to collect now and insert later. ;)

Mathematically speaking, it should make no difference. In fact, since you cannot break an orb when the number of shattered ones are full (at 10), everyone is locked into the same strategy. Some people will get better outcomes from the roll of the die, and that is all there is to it. The only thing you can control is the accumulation of the orbs by what level of the spire you finish.

@Pheryll If I understand you correctly, when the shattered orb bar is full all the rest of the orbs will populate the wheel (since they can't shatter?) Or did I read that wrong? If that's the case, filling the orb bar with shattered orbs and leaving it at that filled place would be the best strategy by far. But I suspect I got that wrong...it would be too good to be true.

Interesting theory, my ore bar is almost full so I will try and prove your theory next spire.

No, once the shattered orbs are full you lose the option to "insert orb" and must forge a rune (using up all 10 shattered orbs) to continue.
