Curse of the Mist Walkers

Henroo

Oh Wise One
I'm now getting sorta free Rangers from the Dojo's. I have 5 out now and over time that should bring my Rangers up to where my Archers have been for ages. That's using a lot more space than my Shrooms is, though, with no other benefit, thus the 'sorta' free characterization.
I would not say no other benefit. Training Dojo gives a decent amount of population. If you are parked at the very start of ch 16 then those 5 Dojos are giving you a total of 18,500 pop. In fact, since it gives population and Grounds of Orc Strategist and Vallorian Valor don't then I think Dojo is the best of the free troop buildings even though it is larger than either GotOS or VV.

the effectiveness in battle against this bad guy is gonna be different for everyone and everyone is not gonna be set up the same so there is no static solution to the original question.
Hence it's important to distinguish the province or spire section when discussing fighting. Don't want a new player lurking about trying to learn battle mechanics to think it always takes 4 overbuffed Archers to take down a Terminator Mist Walker when you can pretty much pick the units blindfolded in the first 5 provinces and still come out victorious. Mist Walkers are horribly devious though and have too many advantages without a high health stat! Let's not forget they also have Strike Back capabilities. I really need to remember my playstyle is not normal or average, lol! I've been playing over 4.5yrs and moving very slowly through the chapters since Dwarves. I probably need to give more caveats when I post!
I parked between 15/16 for a year @Henroo (before any of the tourney changes came about, so not because of that; mainly I don't find the long slow guest race production that's required in higher chapters challenging; it bores me). Then I noticed the Dragon Ark AW at the end of Ch17: It's a dragon, it's a beautiful blue color; absolutely gorgeous bldg. I don't know or care what it does, but I intend to have one. I try to be really efficient in the things I do in my city, so that I can ignore all of those things for pretty buildings lol. I have at least 20 unicorns placed in that city, lol! I always tell FS members to not look at my city to determine which bldgs are worth placing...ask instead. I know which ones are solely there for my enjoyment :D That's probably why I didn't even know the Dojo's gave popo_O

I run with zero houses(have over a dozen magic ones in inventory if needed), 2 magic workshops (over a half dozen of those extra), and 6 fully upgraded factories with well over 25 expansions dedicated to the guest race right now and still have 85K available pop. Collecting the incidental coins from evolving/event bldgs and doing FS visits daily means I still max out my coins every other day or more. My culture is always maxed at 170% before applying EE spells to anything (the only way to move it above 170). I get most of my regular goods from event/evolving bldgs, I have a Dragon Abbey for mana on demand (several thousand PoP and EE spells in inventory) with event/evolving/crafting bldgs for seeds (and ran out of them for the first time the beginning of this chapter! The amount of Sentient goods required is insane! Back up to ~200K of those in inventory and maintaining ~200K of each of the sentients). I will finish this chapter and activate Ch18 before this event ends (even if it takes diamonds to unlock the research for the first time ever; I have plenty from Spire/Mystery Object and nothing else to use them on anyway) as the long slow slogs are getting longer and slower. That will mean I can claim the evolving bldg at Ch18 stats and it will produce Unurium (the new decaying resource - yay?), the first bldg other than the trader that I've seen that does that.
And, then I plan to park it for at least a year.
Or at least until the next pretty/sparkly object catches my eye! Oh, look...a butterfly...it must have flown thru glitter...

@Darielle
Were you in Province 21? I could use 5 sorceresses and win that fight in early provinces; 5 sword dancers and face very few losses, lol! For me, there's a huge jump in squad sizes above province 20 as well as a jump in enemy to player squad size ratio. My Ch17 city (the one I've been looking at for the stats I've given in other posts in this thread) is still doing 6 rounds of 20 provinces; just now thinking about climbing up to 25. I've got 271 AW levels and 138 expansions in that city.
I've gotten my city that's still parked at 15/16 up to consistently doing 6 rounds of 25. With 257 AW levels and 123 expansions, I still drop below the >999 squads weekly; last week, frogs dropped below 900 squads...nothing I couldn't fix with my brown bear and some time boosters;)

Coming in late to the discussion.
Disclaimer: my experience is limited to that of an Elf, and I manually fight 90% of the time.
Pros: I routinely Tourney past 30 provinces even though my Blossoms and Rangers are currently only 2*.

The timing of crackie's OP coincides with the 'higher' Tournies; they seem to be using persistent LR + HM and LR + LM combos to exact a squad/supplies cost from players.

Orc Strats have been mentioned but not in any detail. OrcStrats are a pain to train since they use up 30 supplies per orc and compete in the Training Grounds with Banshees (that is another discussion). Orc Strats form the backbone of my Mist Walker counteroffense and so space in my minimally-expanded city is given to two Orc Nests and 5 Grounds of the Orc Strat. This has been so successful in ramping up my orc supply that I will put the Orc Nests back into storage. (Others have tried Drone Riders and failed.)

My Orc Strats routinely wipe out Mist Walkers on first strike except in the very high provinces. Even my 2* are buffed +70% against and -80% defensive against LR. No unit is better buffed. The major topic that has not been mentioned is that of the Temple of the Toads AW. If you are an Elf, the Golems are such a mainstay of your ability to take and deliver punishment, you really must have a ToT leveled up. It is a rare battle that does not have Golems in it and the ToT does more consistent buffing over number of troops/time than does Needles. As such, the ToT enhances all HR, including the Orc Strat.

IMHO, the Mist Walker is the way Inno requires us to keep making supplies. Anyone who is stressed out by this might try ramping up the Orc Strat/ToT axis. Even if you auto fight, replacing a group of 3-5 Golems with 1 or 2 OS when facing Mists will cut down on your turnover.

There are other strategies that come into play, but this is the main one.

I only autofight. I just took out 3 mistwalkers and 2 mages with 5 dogs. Easy breezy and I hardly lost any. Maybe the game is rigged, lol.
You forgot to include Province number...

I am very much not enjoying this event corresponding with this really mean tourney bc it totally messed up my normal tourney schedule to align completing tourney rounds with event quests. Yesterday, I lost Province 32-35 in a row and was like, dang...this tourney really is extra brutal. And then I realized...I didn’t to feed my Fire Phoenix. Normally, it would have been fed by that time if I didn’t have interrupted event quests! Oof. That was a very costly mistake!

Yes, this is the wonder I want next, but not enough to chapter any faster. Like @samidodamage, settlement stuff bores me too! I am considered a baby city in my FS bc I am only in Halflings. The big boys and girls in my FS keep telling me to fast forward to getting a Timewarp, but I have no interest in chaptering up faster to deal with settlements that take even longer until the game crawls to glacial pace! So many fighting toys are in late game though...

As to Orc Strategists, I agree they do the best job against light range (also Elf) when compared to other light range, Sword Dancers, Drone Riders, or Golems. However, they perform horribly against fellow Heavy Range from my observations. Many times I have witnessed my oversized stack of OS get demolished by a Steinling or Orc Deserter stack smaller than it. This is enough to influence me to use Golems over OS in handling some light range situations where Heavy Range are secondary enemies. OS are great if secondary enemies are Light Melee though.

Well, the thing about mixing OS in with Golems is that, 90% of the time, the opposing HM and LR go after the Golems, which are built to take it, sparing the OS to do their thing on the MWs.

You will notice an appreciable change and you will find it easier to Tourney further when your ToT is in place.

Indeed orc strategist is the best answer to those MWs.
As for LR vs LR (against a much bigger enemy squad size), I'd avoid it like a plague specially when MWs involved.
One could have the strongest LR on the planet but, the MWs always have the first shot and they can shoot at any thing you have if the field is fairly open. So consider your LRs 20% weaker for 3 rounds before you even start the fight. LRs can't afford that loss of power, Orc-s can.
In my opinion Orc Specialist is a better fitting name than Orc strategist ;)

Grrrr...yup, one of each class type. All 3-stars. This tourney is SO MEAN!

I wish there was a building that gave Golems like the GoOrc building. Golems are more versatile when it comes to combo encounters of HMs, LRs and LMs

Yeah, it was low 20s but I was fully buffed. I'm doing 30 provinces this week, hopefully all the way, but that will depend on how bad the last round goes. When I get to the high 20s I usually start catering, even with a fed fire phoenix and several 5-days out. Since I only autofight, I probably get slaughtered more quickly than I would if I manualed it, but I hate manual fighting. I suck at it.

Well, the Wise Golem evolving building, when it comes around, should give you a good supply of Priests. Consolation prize.

They do, it's called the Temple of the Toads, a Halfling level Ancient Wonder.

Yeh, I was disappointed to learn that the wise Golem building produces mages instead! As if this building is a mage academy to promote Golems to priesthood;)
