I learned using this Combat 101 thread and watching the auto fight. Then tried manual fighting until I felt ok with that, then went into the comprehensive guide to learn more details.
The place to learn with fewer losses is the tournaments. Tournament squad sizes are much smaller than regular provinces so losses are less while you learn. One caveat: combat is very hard in the first few chapters. Until you get all the unit types, you won't always have the 'key unit' for that province, making some fights almost impossible.

On the left side of the screen are the different sections of this site. Tournaments has a good rundown of each province type and the units you will need as well as the units you will encounter. There's also a section with battle videos to help you.
