In general crystal is produced by a crystal manufactory. You can buy them from the wholesaler using either coins, supplies or some other goods (I forget which).
But, your question, if I'm reading {into} it right, is about diamonds, (which you call "crystals.") If so they can be purchased with real money. Other "free" sources are: buildings which give diamonds (you can win these if you are lucky, in events or at some points in the Spire). The Spire gives out some diamonds (if you are lucky), and the crafting allows you to sin some diamonds. Craft and do the Spire regularly and you can get diamonds or diamond producing buildings.

Do you mean diamonds? Crystal is manufactured. Diamonds can be won occasionally in the Magic Academy, once you've reached the Dwarves chapter (you get 200 diamonds then) and occasionally in the Spire. You won't be able to play the spire until at least chapter 3. But at the beginning, there's no way to get free diamonds.

@balthazarelven If are talking about diamonds, the best way to win them for free comes from the Spire of Eternity. It is also possible to win them in the Magic Academy. There is a globe you fill with Vision Vapor. When you accumulate 100 Vision Vapor you win a prize. What is available and the chances of it are listed. Every time you win a prize, the options reset. One of the options is sometimes 500 diamonds. I believe you normally have a 20% chance to win them.

If you have a trader, you can trade for crystal when you have no crystal factory. Just post a trade or accept one that offers crystal.
