How many Homes and Workshops?

How many per area I guess? How do I know I have enough?

I have been experimenting with this on a few different worlds. There is a goal to have 10 residences and 4 workshops, and I've been trying to build with just that number. So far so good, as long as they are upgraded pretty high. The main need for residences comes when you add crafted and magical goods -- those manufactories require a LOT of population. You need a certain number of workshops to keep up with the resources for the barracks. That depends on how much fighting you do.

I would say start with 10 residences and 4 workshops, keep them upgraded pretty well and monitor how often you run out of stuff. If you are not online as often, you might need more workshops, but if you can set really short production times (5 minutes) at least a few hours a day, you can get away with fewer workshops.

Well thats about how many homes I have but I have more workshops.

I have 24 residences and 8 workshops. It seems to work out fine for me, but I also have a lot of time during the day, so I'm able to go in and click every five minutes on the workshops if I want. You get more supplies on the short term timers, for the same time span, if you remember to click every time they go off. Gold from the residences seem to go in the opposite direction; the longer you leave them alone, the more 'gold per minute' you get, if that makes sense, or so it seems.

Do you keep all five armories after the quest yo get them? Seems like a waste of space.

I don't use armories at all if I can avoid it, except to build them to fulfill quests. Since I'm online a lot it makes more sense just to keep refilling the troop queues. Depends on how much you like clicking, of course.

I actually only have 4 armories. Seemed like a good balance between what I needed to get through providences and what I was willing to spend on them in terms of resources. Of course, the further out I get, the more likely I'll lose battles if I'm not careful, but that's when I negotiate.

I think 8 to 10 workshop is about the number you should keep, but it's largely dependent on how you want to use the repeatable quest of 'collect X amount of supplies to gain Y amount of coins'- you'll probably need 10 if you want to complete the quest every half an hour.

If you don't have any of those premium culture buildings that will also give you a lot of population, you'll eventually need about 50 or even 60 residences with max level to support all the other buildings in the late game, so feel free to build and upgrade however many residences you like as long as you don't have a lot of surplus population in each stage because it's utterly useless.

I am getting close to the end of Level 2. I have only 8 workshops, Level 6, of my "boosted" goods.
Should I keep that number of workshops from Level 2 or start making room for my next level boosted goods workshops?

I am a little confused by your terminology. Workshops are the things that produce generic supplies; which are used to train military and in nearly all buildings. Factories are buildings that produce specific goods, there are 9 types split into 3 TIERS, and players get one type BOOSTED in each of the tiers.

If you mean workshops then 8 is a good number, most people use that many. I went up to 8 then down to 6 and then back up to 8.

If you mean T1 factories, then you should keep the ones you have and only take them down when you absolutely need space. You will gain space for your new T2 factories soon enough. There is much debate about how many to have in each tier, and the answer is that it depends on your play style. I would suggest joining or founding a fellowship to try out the tournaments and learn the combat system. If you find you don't like the combat system then plan to have more factories and to keep your military buildings at minimal levels. If you like the combat then plan on developing your military and reducing how many factories you have and don't be discouraged by province encounters there is a spot during chapters 2 and 3 when your military simply can not do them; after that time military becomes the much more efficient way to progress through provinces.

Thank you. Yes I meant factories. I have 8 of those manufacturing steel, 8 workshops and 16 residences. I don't plan on going to battle but I do have one barracks and one armory.

With factories you are better to work on space occupied (squares) rather than actual factory numbers. The different factories have a different size and also vary again by race. Thus I could tell you a number of factories based on my boosts and race and that number could be completely wrong for you. The production per square is practically identical so you can compare space regardless of boost or race. Interestingly the space doesn't need to vary as you advance through the chapters either.

I recommended to people to work on 40 squares of factory space for each boosted good type as a minimum. Your play style and approach will determine if you should have more of a certain type. I have heard of people with less space but most people seem to fit between 40-60 squares of space for free-to-play. There is a thread which discusses "how much factory space do you use?" that will help you to see how different people approach the issue, often workshop numbers are covered in that discussion too.

Keep 1 Armoury and make sure to continuously upgrade it as you progress through the chapters...
Eventually, you will absolutely NEED 1 fully upgraded armoury in order to produce a new resource: Orcs.

Once you're into the Orcs & Goblins chapter, you will require Orcs in order to advance in both research, and, to negotiate encounters on the world map.
Ending up in the O&G chapter, and then realising you; a) don't have any armouries and/or b) have 0 space to put down & upgrade an armoury, will suck massively! :p

Keep a 4x4 area set aside for an armoury & save yourself from this potentially disastrous & time consuming aggravation!

Thank you, Mykan. As usual you are as kind as you are wise.
