When you are one of the top 3 or 4 donators (depending on the wonder) you get a reward. To get rune shards for the same wonder, you have to be the top donator. For all other reward levels, it's a small number of KP. So you may have got some KP back, but may not have noticed. I know sometimes the game has a pop-up letting you know that you were one of the top and sometimes it doesn't.

Unfortunately, the game is not very good at letting you know when a wonder has completed and you are receiving a reward. Sometimes a notice pops up and sometimes it doesn't. Usually the only way to tell is if you happen to notice extra KP that you didn't expect and possibly a indicator on your wonders button indicating that you have received a rune. I wish ( and have suggested) that they have a log of wonders that you have donated to. At least then you could keep track of things as they complete.
