Definition of "Contest"
From the Oxford English Dictionary: Struggle for victory,
for a desired object. Amicable conflict, as between competitors
for a prize or distinction.
From Merriam-Webster: A struggle for superiority or victory; a competition in which each contestant performs without direct contact with or interference from competitors.
That has been the accepted usage of the noun "contest" since the 17th century, so I don't think it was lost in translation. It is not slang or an idiom.
So, how is there a contest without rules and a prize?
Perhaps it should simply have been called "an assortment of mushrooms" or "mushroom sharing" or "mushroom collection".
