Retrace: verb (used with object), re·traced, re·trac·ing.
to trace backward; go back over: to retrace one's steps.
to go back over with the memory.
to go over again with the sight or attention.
With events asking for encounters in quests at various points where that may be difficult to accomplish, something that could help while keeping control on how much they're used: a new spell to allow players to redo the fights in a province.
You could balance it so the province becomes 0/8 again but with the troop numbers modified to your current level (so you don't just retrace your first province and plow through it too easily).
As for availability you could put them in spire, crafting, regular MA production either for relics costs or even perhaps a blueprint? There's all kinds of options to keep them from becoming too easy to get.
And then players have an emergency backup for times they're called to fight when doing so would cause overscouting etc.
