I am still pretty new and have never used them. The people on the forum don't seem very impressed, but then they think orc strategists are the bees knees, and they don't seem that much better than golems to me.
It always depends on the level of the person who is discussing them. I know some people rave about frogs, but they don't remember when they had a level one frog. They're raving about level 2 and 3s. Another person might get the wrong impression and try to use their level 1 frog in the same way as those people suggest, and wind up hating it. So I guess each person's perspective is skewed by what they actually have and use.

@Darielle I was wondering if it might be something like that. The orc strategists I get from my ground of orc strategists are of course 1 star, so maybe they really are not that much better than 1-star golems and the improvement will come later.

It also occurred to me that the people who love orc strategists might be playing human, whose mortars are apparently not as good as golems.

You get the promotions for Golems a lot earlier in the game than you do for Orc Strats. The 3 star promotion for Golems happens in Dwarves (ch 6). You don't even get the 2 star promotion for Orc Stats until Halflings (ch 11). 3 star Golems do perform on a similar level to 1 star Orc Strats. But once you get the Orcs promoted, they are better.

@Henroo I am in chapter 3 and my golems are 1 star. It will be a while before they get promoted. (All of the current ones will be dead by then, poor fellows.) I should be in chapter 4 sometime next week though!

@SeaWolf Drone Riders are enemy light range specialists. Better than sword dancers at the task because they can actually chase them down, but not as good as Golems and Orc Strategists. Enemy AI seems to like to chase them like they do with archers so they are good cannon fodder to take the heat off your other units. Also, if you're an elf, not having to produce Drone Riders so you can make more Blossom Mages in the Merc Camp is not a bad thing :)

@Gladiola For me, it's not a matter of liking Golem or OS more, but I won't have enough Golems left if I try to use them to specialize against archers too. As a manual fighter, I favor Golems (and frogs) instead of heavy melee against light melee because it drives me nuts that heavy melee inefficiently spends half the battle walking around. Golems need to time share barracks, whereas OS can come from GotOS or Training Camp. When all the enemy archers are dead, Orc Strategists also hold up well on secondary matchups, much better than other enemy light range specialists like Drone Riders or Sword Dancers. For example, against heavy range, Drone Riders/Sword Dancers will get pummeled by the heavy range attack bonus but OS won't. Even against heavy melee, their nemesis, OS are range units, so they can still sometimes defeat a heavy melee unharmed by using the terrain, whereas the Drone Rider/Sword Dancer will have to go up and bang itself against a brick wall kamikaze style AND take a strike back blow on every hit. Once your mages get stronger, they become better options than Vallorian Valors and treants against heavy range by the fact they get to them soooo much faster. However, mages need a lot of protection from pesky archers and their long range! OS hits harder than both Drone Riders and Sword Dancers. Light range get to attack before your mages and OS so when it's your turn to hit, you have to make sure the light range goes down and stay down or it's another free shot on your mages. Using Sword Dancers and Drone Riders will require a few more hits to take them down. Even at level 1, OS will get the job done quickly enough, especially in the higher tents or Spire when enemy stacks start to outnumber you.

Orc Strategists are great against Light Ranged. Even as an Elf, I find that 1* Orc Strategists tend to perform better against Light Ranged than Golems; they mow down Light Ranged like they are paper. Another benefit over Golems is they have Strike Back. Having said that, they are more frail than Golems (at 1* at least) and don't seem to perform as well against Light Melee even with Strike Back. So for Elves, it really is a toss-up.

Very true.
