Upgrade Training Grounds

I am in the Vll age and am trying to upgrade the training grounds. It appears I am at level 8 trying to go to 9. I have the barracks at 17 and not sure why I can't upgrade the training grounds. Is this suppose to happen? Do I need to upgrade the barracks to 18? The only thing I see that is close to what I am trying to do is Mercenary Camp and or armory. Some advise and help please.

Each type of building is independent of all the others for when you can upgrade, but rather is based solely on the research you have done for the building. The only time another building may come into play is the Main Hall, if it is not leveled up enough to hold the coins and/or supplies needed to build or upgrade something.
 
Not all buildings are independent as I see it. If the research isn't done you can't build some buildings. Right now I'm waiting to upgrade a Workshop but can't do it until I do the research on or in level 8 which when completed can up grade to level 18. I'm not seeing anything connected to the training grounds that allows it to expand. Showing the next size but not allowing me to upgrade. Thanks

You need to research Orcish Style Training grounds. That will be in chapter 8, Mud & Mushrooms, formerly known as Orcs & Goblins.

That makes sense as there are orcs grayed out in the current training grounds. Have a while yet to get there, I'm working my way through Vll. Thanks
