upgrading residence to 4 it says research?

when I try to upgrade my residence to level 4 it says research? what do i research?

There is a research/Tech Tree. You have not yet reached/researched the advanced residence in the tech tree. Until you fill it with KPs and open it you can't upgrade your residence.
