Upgrading using diamonds

If I understand right, the builders hut and the magic academy are both upgraded using diamonds. So my question is, if I upgrade in one world, are they upgraded in all worlds? Or do I have to upgrade them separately, using diamonds each time?

They are only upgraded in the world you are in. Though your diamond total is shared across worlds, upgrades are city-specific.

So, if I'm playing in 3 worlds, I need 1500 diamonds to upgrade to 3 builders? Wow!
(It does seem to me that when I started playing, in one world, obviously, I had to upgrade to 2 builders, but as soon as I started another world, I had 2 builders right away, so I was hoping that was the way it worked.)

We start with one, but (at least in the past) we'd get enough diamonds for free to upgrade the builder. I'm pretty sure it was part of the introductory quest chain.

Upgrading to builder level 2 is introductory (before you are even assigned a world), which is why all your later cities will begin with this done. The game feature is to teach you how to spend diamonds and is given at a point where you cannot spend diamonds on anything else. Just use the stock that is provided at the very beginning.

To be clear the sharing of diamonds is for the same account on the same server, of course the spending is unique to each world/town

As mentioned it relates to the introductory quests, were you to start on a new server I am fairly sure you get the introductory stuff again in the first town. But any new towns on an existing server skip the introduction as you have done it already.
