I never kept them past the quest (if there was one).

I had 10 of them until the beginning of chapter 11 and I did fine. I used event buildings and torch fountains from chapter 10 to replace them.

Good for when you get them, but not upgradable. You can do better with specialist event buildings for pop/culture and for mana.

I found them to not be worth the space but that was because I had other options (event buildings) that did a better job for me. For everyone it's different though, if you don't have better options then obviously it's going to seem like a worthwhile building to have. I built one when I first had the opportunity but quickly sold it in favor of building a better building in it's place. Again though how worthwhile it is comes down to whether you have other better options.
