Depends.
I've used it before to get through a quest in an event when I really really wanted to daily grand prize.
Have also used one after a particularly horrible climb up the spire and was so low on coins I couldn't do much in my city after.
Coins come and go pretty easily but there will inevitably come a time when you need a ton all at once.

Another idea: When I want to get a research tech opened quickly (ex: Adv Scouts tech so event buildings with have the next chapter stats) I use it for buying the kp.

Just make sure your coins are as close to empty as possible before using it, so you get more value for the instant! It basically just tops off whatever you have in the bar, you cannot exceed the limit. Hopefully this makes sense!
