Ah, but one can acquire diamonds in-game nowadays, so that value isn't quite true.
Now, everyone may have a budget they seem reasonable for a game. For a long-term game like this I basically used to budget about $10,- a month (in my case, for a long time per city, which adds up). Didn't mean I would use that every month, but that was what I felt reasonable for my style of play and the amount of time I would spend on the game. So taking a few good bonus% offers each year would help. And I would move the purchases around a bit, so sometimes the main cities would get more and the smaller cities would get less.
