Troop Icon Question

When you go to battle each type of squad has an icon. There is a notice that says squad size and each type of icon has a number across the bottom. The squad size is not always the same as the number on the icon.
What does the number across the bottom of the icon mean? How do I figure out my army size as well as the enemy army size?

Troops are weighted, so some of them have more units per squad than others. To figure it out, open your Army Camp and hover over the unit icon. A pop up box will tell you how many units per squad, how many total units, how many squads, etc. Your 'light' troops (light range, light melee) will have the same number of units as your squad size. Your 'heavy' troops (heavy melee, heavy range) will have less units per squad. Mage units are somewhere in-between.

Here I have compared a Barbarian to a Paladin, since a Paladin's size is 6, it divides 2004 by 6 and I'm actually taking 334 per slot into battle whereas the Barbarian is 1 so I take the full 2004. Same as in your screen shot where the enemy is showing a squadsize of 24 but only getting 4 per slot because they also have a size of 6. 24/6 = 4 . Your Squad Size of 9 is also dividing by 6 but then rounding up from 1.5 to 2.

Thank you for the replies.
Lord Drac, basically since the enemy squadsize is 24, in my picture, and there are 2 squads, there are 48 total enemies regardless what the number across the bottom says?
For the defenders, the squad size is 9, so if I filled each of the 5 slots I would have 45?
Or does the "takes up space" part mean that the individuals are so large that 1 unit takes up the space of 6 smaller units so that there are a smaller total number of larger units?
I am having trouble with this. It seems like I get it and then it goes away.

If you either inside your barracks or before selecting troops after selecting 'Fight' click on the 'i' it will bring up a breakdown of the unit where you will find the little size thing where the arrow here is pointing. This will tell you Size of Unit, hovering over it will cause a pop explaining more like in the earlier screen shot.
Some unit types are bigger. Think of it like 6 barbarians could fit inside of 1 paladin. To get the size you use in each slot you have to divide your total squad size by the Size of Unit. The total of all slots has nothing to do with it.
Weird Example: If your squad size was your car and your car could hold 6 standard sized people, 6 barbarians could fit in it but only 1 paladin because he's 6 times bigger. So if your squad size is 12, you can fit 12 barbarians or 2 paladins. etc

Also, what works best against a mage?
If when on the unit selection screen you hit the yellow '?' in the upper right it will show you this key:

Where you can see that Archers and Light Melee work best against a mage by the arrows pointing from them to mage.
You can also further decide which one you want to use by clicking the 'i' on each unit as mentioned earlier to determine if range or abilities may further influence your choice. Example: I would use Archers over barbarians for the range but Cerberus is a unit you get later that is light melee and has excellent range. Several factors go into these decisions but that star chart gets you started.

In your picture the row above the enemy units shows your squad size (9) and theirs (24). This is hard to compare as it is basically a 5v2 fights. Whether you put in 1 squad or 5 your squad size is consistent as it relates to how large a squad you can field in one of your 5 options. It is this squad size comparison that determines fight difficulty more than anything else.

Every unit type has 2 unit types that are good against it. In the case of a mage it is light range and light melee. Any of these unit types in your barracks will do quite well. The specialists though are cerberus (from training grounds, accessed early) or rangers (from mercenary camp, accessed rather late)

The game also shows you thi when you hover over you units when you are in the army setup screen. It will highlight enemy units types that your troop is good against or neutral towards. Just be careful as is does include neutral which while ok will not always get the best result.

All of this information applies to new players, this is what I feel needs to be explained and expanded on in the early stages of game play. Kudos to all for your insight.

It is slightly more advanced than new players have access to .. but something to look forward to relatively soon.
Cerberus units absolutely rip mage type units to shreds -- the dogs are very low on defense however as a trade off.
In the meanwhile, I found archers to be really handy against the spell casters.
Archers have an advantage of being more adept at the heavy units that sometimes show up earlyish -- light melee troops wilt against them.
