Any building will do for upgrading in quests including AW’s? (As long as it’s 5 or higher)

Yes. Even buildings that require Royal Restorations or Blueprints to upgrade (though I don't know if that only works for those in chapter 5 or higher since those building's level tend to be the chapter's number)

If it's only ch5 and above, upgrading 1x1 buildings such as the Mana Plant or Gum Tree (from Moonstone Library Set), or the Rainbow Flower Cages that you can craft from MA works.

Though if you can't afford to burn RRs like that, the quickest path is usually building and upgrading a small T1 manufactory to the requisite level if you've run out of other buildings to upgrade.

On thing you can do to avoid spending a lot of RR spells is to have some 1/1 buildings. Then 10 RR will last you quite a while...usually through the event. I use mana plants and gum trees
