Warning regarding researching more ancient wonders

We all know that getting the runes you need before you can even build an ancient wonder are tough. When we had 2 wonders, you had a 50/50 shot of getting the rune you wanted. Then there were 4 wonders. In order to get the runes you needed now, you had a 1/4 shot. That was tough enough. But then they added more.

DO NOT RESEARCH additional wonders unless you want runes for those wonders. You don't have to research the new secret wonders and you don't have to research the two fairy wonders. You can hold off until you get the runes you want.

For example....say you are trying to get the runes to build a martial monastery. If all you have researched are the monastery and the crystal lighthouse, you will have a 50/50 shot at getting monastery runes when you get runes from clearing provinces or tournaments. But, if you have rushed to do all the research, now you only have a 1 in 8 shot of getting those runes.

Let's take an average of 25 runes (with breakage) to get you those 9 whole runes you need for the monastery. You need 50 runes on average to get the ones you want (because with a 50/50 shot you will get those 25 runes in 50 chances). However, if you researched all the wonders, it will take you 8 times as many ....or 200 runes to get those monastery runes you want. And 2 more wonders are coming in another couple of weeks so that will be 1 in 10 shot and then you will need 250 runes to get the monastery.

Consider upgrades too.

In order to get that monastery from level 5 to level 6 you need to go through the process all over again and get 9 more runes. Then, if you want to take it from level 10 to level 11, you need to get those runes again!!

So BEFORE you do any research on wonders, MAKE SURE YOU ARE WILLING TO SPLIT YOUR CHANCES OF GETTING RUNES MORE WAYS THAN YOU HAVE NOW.

One of the nice thing for newer players like me is that the first two wonders come up early, so I can focus on those before having to worry about even having the option of researching the others.

However, researching the wonders and using all that kp early on means that your progress through the tech tree will be ultra slow. But there is nothing wrong with playing the game slowly. :)

Or, to look at it the other way round, you'll be able to muddle your way through the Tech Tree more gracefully, with
  • fewer Residences
  • fewer Workshops
  • fewer Manufacturing Buildings
because you'll no longer whipped by the the risk of "wasting" some of your 24 per day Knowledge Point allowance, if you can't keep up, or if you don't like to tune everything down to the last gnat's eyelash.

Many players would likely suggest that you defer deciding on the early Wonders until we have a full Wiki listing of all the costs and benefits. So far, we've seen that Wonders before Dwarven level are pretty, but at the cost of slowing game progress. On the one hand, there's no rule you have to go fast. On the other hand, it would be frustrating to inadvertently slow your pace if you wanted to go faster.

So far - key modifier! - the more quickly we can enlarge our cities, the happier we tend to be. Expansions come from progressing through the Research and from conquering new provinces. This requires KP, goods, optional fighting units. And...

...early Wonders need KP, so Research is slower. They take up space, so you will have fewer goods. Perhaps, when the full list of all the new Wonders is published, we'll all be able to see if their impact is "slower but more fun", "equal speed and prettier", or "slower and more frustrating". My soap box opinion is the latter (since frustration drives sales).
