When will the next "Weed-B-Gone" occur ?

If memory serves correctly; players who have not played the game in awhile will lose their towns and such. When will this occur so I can warn my Fellowship ?
Thank You.

Enjoy the cities for as long as possible for the full coin payout. Dead cities or gold mines = no traders either way you slice it. I'm in Felyndral world and have gold mines that are nearly 2 months old.

  • Inactive cities are currently being replaced after 30 days, directly by an immigrant (about 1% of the cities per day)
  • After 31 days, if no immigrants have claimed the city, it is flipped to a Goldmine
  • If no inactive are available, the immigrant will replace a Goldmine (about 1% per week, because we are still growing)
The safe harbor threshold appears to be:
  • More than 200 diamonds in the account (we don't know if small cities are abandoned when the account balance is higher)
  • An average upgrade level of 4 or higher, but only buildings that can be sold are counted, so you can, in effect, zero out an unwanted city
The developers have indicated that they will soon™ begin moving isolated cities to areas that are more densely populated.

** The above information is based on direct observation and table scrapes. The developers have not committed to anything, nor have they stated their objectives for map usage.

Sure wish that was accurate. I have finished 273 Provinces and currently have 141 gold mines out of the city's that cover the rest only 5 have been active since last Christmas. One even posted as the name of her city "Closed Down 3/19/16"

I'm on US sever 2 Winyandor

Yup definitely not accurate. I have nearly 80 cities discovered, all but 7 are gold mines. Of those 7, 1 is active, 1 appears once in awhile, the rest are dead but due to purge requirements do not get removed. Some of those 5 cities have been dead for 2 - 3 months. I've had some gold mines for nearly 2 months, I can't remember the last time a new city appeared. This is on Felyndral world.

I've got 203 provinces, and 23 are still "cities". Those cities though equal 3 players who play about 4x a week, 2 players who play about 1x a month, and the rest never post trades, never visit me & I doubt they are playing at all. So that's 5 "actives" but in my opinion only 3 real actives. Although I will take non-active cities over gold mines any time! Same scenario for me - some of these cities have been inactive for months, I can't remember getting a new neighbor for ages & ages. I normally send a note to a new person's inbox to say hello & hopefully encourage them to play, but I can't look back at that since my mailbox only shows items since this past June, and I have sent no messages to anyone new since then for sure. The gold mines have been there for a long time & the last sweep of dead cities took at least 15 cities, maybe more. I'm on US Winyandor also.

If inactive cities are being replaced every 30 days or so with new players, and if gold mines are ever turning into cities again, I'd love to know where this is happening, because it sure hasn't ever been happening in my neck of the woods. No one is coming IN - the only thing that has happened is that cities keep leaving & I get gold mines instead.

The current immigration algorithm starts in the center of the map, and spirals outward. The obvious weakness is that if there aren't enough immigrants to get all the way to the edge of the map, WITHIN 30 days, and there's not, then only the interior of the map will be getting new immigrants.

There is some evidence to suggest that the developers used an even ring / odd ring approach, when they were flipping Goldmines, so that the fringes of the map would be halfway through the cycle, but the current immigrants are favoring new vacancies near the center of the map.

If you're stuck on the fringes od the map you'll be surrounded by Goldmines until the developers activate the algorithm for shifting isolated cities to areas that are more densely populated. Soon™

I play on a laptop & don't have a mouse, so I don't think I'm able to scroll out very well to get very large images of the map. In Winyandor, is there any general idea on WHERE the center of the map is? Meaning, can I go look at some player's city, view their map & then scan in my own direction to see how far away I am from the center?

So if I am correct in understanding what you are saying above, Katwijk, then those who are lucky enough to be in the center-ish areas are getting new neighbors regularly while the fringes continue to get none (dependent, of course, on how many new players start playing)?

In my experience, yes this is the case. Unless you happened to get extremely lucky and get into the middle of the map when your city first was created, you can sit on the edges and languish for years. I have been playing on beta since the beginning of 2015 and I have never had neighbors. On Arendyll, I started the day this world started and I am in the middle of the map and out of 300 plus provinces explored I don't think I have a single gold mine. That doesn't mean I have actual neighbors though. I mostly have dead cities that were too advanced to ever be deleted. The newbies I have around me come and go. Every once in a blue moon someone will stick around and play the game.

I don't think they purge every 30 days though. I have opened other worlds to go see friend's cities and the game creates another city for me that I never intend to play. However, it takes 6 months or more for that inactive city go away. I'd love to delete them immediately because I know I have no intention in ever playing there and I feel awful for the people who are near me. But alas, there is no such capability.

I do know I have new neighbors via the trader but they are in ring 15+ from me which will take months at my current progress (Dev's would be happy if I stick around).

There's no easy way to figure out where you are on the map. If you look at https://us.forum.elvenar.com/index.php?threads/winyandor-vacancy-watch.1572/#post-10293, six months ago I was watching the Winyandor map rather closely, so I have several landmarks to work with.
  • Winter Willow is very near the center of the Winyandor map, with earider and evalette as near neighbors
  • Travelstovegas is 170 or so rings from the center of the map, near the 10 o'clock radial
I play on a laptop & don't have a mouse, so I don't think I'm able to scroll out very well to get very large images of the map.
Chrome and Edge both provide a browser menu zoom that works just as well as the mouse wheel. Firefox, not so much.
I do know I have new neighbors via the trader but they are in ring 15+ from me
As best we can tell, once you have a trader you'll have access to your 200 nearest neighbors, which is about fourteen and a half flat-topped hexagonal rings.

(I had to stack two messages because of the 10,000 character limit per post.)

I don't think they purge every 30 days though.

If you look at my current charts for https://us.forum.elvenar.com/index.php?threads/arendyll-neighborhood-watch.2973/page-2#post-21083, wherein I'm closely monitoring the 10 o'clock radial as a bellwether, you'll be able to see that
• Non-safe harbor cities are being replaced by new immigrants after exactly 30 days, wherever they might be on the map
• If no immigrants claim the inactive city, then it's replaced by a Goldmine on the 31st day
• When Goldmines were first introduced, there's substantial evidence that the developers were using an odd row pass, even row pass to spread out the occupancy dates, but all of the recent immigrants have been taking the eligible sector that's the closest to the center of the map
• Consequently, there are very few Goldmines left on the interior of the map, while the fringes of the map has a LOT of Goldmines
• The developers have indicated that they will soon™ begin to move isolated cities to the more populated areas of the map but, to be fair, an Archive/Retrieve/Move capability makes Flying Units look easy.

I just started playing last night, and the idea of losing my whole city if I don't play for a few months is sort of alarming. I understand why they would clear out inactive cities, but once I sign up for a game I usually stay around for years. But also, there's some months here or there I can't get on to play. Do they send an email warning before they do that?

Once you've invested about 20 hours of playing time into your city (once the average upgrade level is 4 or higher), or if you have more than 200 Diamonds in your account, your city won't be deleted.

But dead and/or seldom played cities ARE a problem, because they clutter up the map and never participate in the neighborhood activities. We do not yet have the feature, but the developers are currently working on an Archive/Retrieve/Move capability.

If you haven't played in a couple of months you probably don't care who your neighbors might be, so retrieving your city and plopping it into a vacant city sectors, with the appropriate boosts, would be a fine solution on several fronts.

Oh, thank you! That makes sense and seems fair. The move feature sounds like a great idea.

We shall see. I am trepidatious. I would rather a different solution were found. This way all the great friends I have made as neighbors will be constantly ripped away from me. Trading routes that took me a year to establish will be wiped out in an instant. idk.

I didn't think about that aspect. Right now I'm so tiny that I don't have anything to offer to a trade route. I think I just realized this game is only about a year old. I want to advance my city, but for me I love the decorative aspect of it, it was actually the rainbow unicorn yesterday that got me to try out the game and stay after I got lucky and won it from a chest. It'd be kind of neat if, after you gained so many game hours and points, you could 'move up' into more prestigious lands. I know that would also cause issues, but fantasy wise, it could make sense, especially if you had the option to do it through a spell that cost a lot of gold.

There are so many good ideas for how to fix the map. I don't know if I like this one. It may be easier for the devs, but terribly destructive to all of us. It will certainly be unsettling. But, it hasn't even happened yet, so maybe all my worries are for nothing. Maybe it will be fabulous.
