Sometimes those chest notifications are just event currency that has landed in your place while you are away visiting neighbors. So it is possible that there is no chest to find.

That's true currently, but the notifications have been going on since the chests were added to the game. The notification comes from the server, so if you are helping as fast as you can, the notification can easily arrive too late to be useful.
