Map Geography

To validate the Nine Near Neighbors feasibility study that's posted at
https://us.forum.elvenar.com/index.php?threads/nine-near-neighbors.1248/#post-7835,
I've been tracking the development of the us3: Felyndral world map since the world first opened, and now that 30+ days have passed we should start seeing some replacement cities.

While you're looking through the following table, and hopefully checking out these cities on the world map, please note the following items:
  • missourian, with a score of 0, is the lowest ranked player. While it may be that he has logged in since 10/15/2015 it's not likely, and in any case there should be several other players, near the end of the roster, who will fall by the wayside.
  • missourian does not have a city on the world map. If you visit his city, from the roster, and then click on the world icon the map will focus on your own city, or on the last world map city that you visited.
  • jeremiaan, with a score of 1, is the lowest ranked player who has a positive score. ALL cities with a positive score, which is about 2/3rds of the cities, are shown on the World Map. A handful of cities that have a score of zero are also shown on the world map, perhaps because they deleted buildings that had already been built.

  • Nanabarb is at the very center of the us3 map. If you go to her city, the blue arrow will indicate where your city is located on the World Map.
  • Cities are added one hexagonal ring at a time, and a new ring always starts at the 1 o'clock corner. Immigrants are currently filling ring 242, and the map can thereby accommodate 44,287 cities, whereupon we'll add another ring. Each odd numbered ring contains 6 more cities than the previous odd numbered ring. (Each ring has 6 more sectors than the previous ring, but there are twice as many relic sectors as city sectors.)
  • Each day I have been noting the six cities that occupy the corners of the current outermost hexagonal ring, and the cities are grouped 1 o'clock through 11 o'clock, in accordance with their position on the world map at the time of observation.
  • The most recently inserted cities are near 2 0'clock.
    • Thomas66 on 11/20
    • sdcolabear on 11/21.

The Welcome Wagon (and the Hearse)

I've been tracking the new arrivals, each day, simply by going to yesterday's corner cities and following the diagonal to the edge of the current hexagon. The indicated date is the game date at the time of observation, so our granularity is about 30 hours, depending on how long the city was in place before we noticed it.

For the first 30 days we were gaining right at 2000 ranked players per day, but once us4: Khelonaar opened we dropped to 30 immigrants per day, as expected. You may have noticed that the release of us4 was a bit rushed, because we were running out of space (server capacity) in the first three US worlds.

I've sorted the following table by diagonal, so if you search for the first city in each group, and then go outwards towards the related clock number, you'll find the rest of the listed cities in that group.

I've only listed a city if their score has been the same for more than 30 days. It may be that the owner logged in without doing anything, which would reset the timer, or that the city is sponsored by a premium account, but for the most part we're assuming that a dead city will soon be buried.

The obvious questions are:
  • WHEN, and how often, will the dead cities be removed?
  • HOW SOON will a new owner move in?
  • DOES (should?) the availability of new immigrants influence the removal of dead cities?
  • Is there any sort of clustering?
    .
  • Are small, dead, premium account sponsored cities EVER archived?
  • Are active, but isolated cities EVER moved toward the center of the map?
  • If cities do move, do they move to a location with the same relic boosts?
(There are only nine unique city + relics combinations.)
    .
  • And, broadly, how does the neighborhood algorithm, or the lack thereof, effect game play?
Watch this space. I'll keep you posted.

An effective report will contain hard data about how your local neighborhood is faring. You are therefore encouraged to post a similar synopsis for your own city, and then edit it in the future as folks come and go.

If you just want to note the status of a couple of cities, then a simple list will suffice, but if you want to be comprehensive it's convenient to use the BBCode Table Generator at http://www.teamopolis.com/tools/bbcode-table-generator.aspx to create a similar table, and then save it as a cookie on your own computer. You can copy paste the generated code directly into your forum post, BUT you'll need to manually remove all of the line breaks and tabs, by pressing End or Down, followed by Deletes as needed.

The fun has begun in us3: Felyndral. We've now seen our first few hundred removals.

Nanabarb's city is at the exact center of the us3 map, and as you can tell by the blue arrow,
Katwijk's city is in the 1 o'clock direction. If you count the diagonal sectors,
you'll find that only the even numbered rings have cities,
and Katwijk's city is in about the 30th ring, which is to say that he's 15 cities
toward 1 o'clock, if you start in the center of the world map and follow the arrow.

You can obviously use the same technique to locate your own city on the map.
I'd encourage you to do exactly that, and it would be wonderful if you were to
take some notes, and perhaps share the status of your 6 + 12 nearest neighbors.
I've previously listed my 6 + 18 nearest neighbors, and I'm tracking several other cities that were at the corners of the hexagon when they first placed on the map, and will therefore be (or will be missing or replaced) on a diagonal from the center of the map.

As you can see in the following 25% zoom (Chrome Ctrl+Mousewheel) today's removals have nearly reached my ring, but nothing outbound of my city has been removed, as yet. My city is well more than a month old, so it's apparent that only part of the inactive folks have been removed, and we'll be watching to see how many more folks are removed, and how often.

From scrolling around the us3: Felyndral world map, the empty city sectors are pretty well scattered, so Last Date Active is the likely basis for removal, starting from the center of the map. I'm very much interested in whether, or not, active cities are EVER moved to the interior of the map, because otherwise we'll be entirely dependant on new arrivals to fill in the holes on the map. About 15 immigrants per day have been trickling in to us3: Felyndral.

ok, gotta ask! how do you see so many cities, on the map?
I'm ok with inactives or innogame dwarven bots as neighbors.
it's the players under 500 city score points with the main hall building for over 30 days I'd like to see replaced as soon as possible.

I have no way of knowing how recently somebody logged on, other than noticing when their scores change, but I'm expecting the following cities to get zapped within a few days.
  • Ring 72, 1 o'clock Navaeh
  • Ring 76, 1 o'clock fcaler
I'm also watching the vacant cities to determine if they're merely filled with new immigrants, we're getting about 15 immigrants per day, OR if isolated cities ever be shifted to what would hopefully be a better location nearer the center of the map. Note that it will be several days until the pruning reaches the edge of the map hexagon, which is what will isolate some active cities, but Shizuka's city in Ring 242 between 5 o'clock and 6 o'clock is the city to watch. If immigrants are being used to fill up the vacant cities, then Shizuka's city has been hung out to dry.

The following table starts with Nanabarb's city, which is at the exact center of the us3: Felyndral map, and then follows the 1 o'clock diagonal for the first 80 rings. You'll note that a handful of the cities are vacant at the moment, and tracking exactly what happens to those cities, and how soon, is the point of this exercise.

This is amazing information. Well done Kat. I am most interested in the part where in the beginning Felandryl was getting 2000 new players a day and now it is down to 20. I would guess that most of the new players in the beginning came from the pool of players that were already here, on Arendyll and Winyandor. I am very curious as to how many new players this game over all is getting and how many are staying. The game is even slower now for the new players than it was for us when we were new. I surmise that this is going to harm retention, but I wonder if there is a way to find out for sure.

I have some overall questions....are the changes to the game because they are making so much money from players and they think they have more to get, or are they desperate and thinking that more of the mind numbing boredom will get someone, anyone, to spend some money on this game. It would help us all going forward to have a good idea of how they are thinking so we know what to expect. More stuff being taken away in an effort to force us to spend money? Or more stuff being given to us because they are doing well and they have enough players to support the game getting bigger?

I also read this thing recently about how Adobe is not even pushing Flash any more because it is so vulnerable to security issues. When even Adobe is pushing Html 5, that is a bad sign for Flash based games. I worry about our future here.

  1. It's pretty easy to track the bottom entry in the Rank Roster, for each world every week or so. When the roster gets to about 75,000 we're apparently maxing out a server, which is probably why there was such a rush on opening us4. We pretty much maxed out us3 in less than a month.
  2. The important metric is actually the number of concurrent active sessions, but that's closely held information that InnoGames' competition would LOVE to get their hands on, so we have to use secondary indicators. The 75th percentile score is what I use to judge how well a world is doing.
  3. City Builders have always been a orphan genre. My "hope" is that InnoGames will take the mechanics from FoE, without the PvP elements and, by providing an intriguing product, will be able to breath new life into the City Builder genre which hasn't really hasn't had a successful new title for 10 years. City Builders have traditionally been very cerebral, pretty much the exact opposite of an arcade game.
  4. InnoGames probably doesn't KNOW exactly what will be successful, although "cities that thrive on their own" is obviously a core concept. My sense is that Elvenar is growing MUCH faster than the developers anticipated. That's a nice problem to have, but it's still a problem.
    .
  5. InnoGames is a privately held firm that is funded, in large part, by http://www.eightroads.com/.
As a private investment firm with permanent capital, we can invest with a long time horizon.
This supports our focus on innovative and ambitious businesses looking to disrupt or lead their chosen markets.
  6. I have an MBA, and some considerable experience with project management, and I'm absolutely certain that InnoGames has a development plan for Elvenar, and that much of what "doesn't make sense to us" is driven by an aggressive strategy to disrupt and capture the City Builder market before the competition can get their feet untangled.
    .
  7. Take a look at http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/adobe-phasing-out-flash_565de8cde4b072e9d1c37767. I'm not at all worried about the transition from Flash to HTML5 based products such as Adobe Animate CC. The development platform is system agnostic, and whether the underlying compiled code is proprietary Flash, or legitimate HTML, or some mix thereof, shouldn't make much difference to the end users.
  8. Take a look at http://www.cio.com/article/2376661/internet/how-adobe-is-moving-on-from-flash-to-embrace-html5.html, from a couple of years ago. This transition has been a long time coming, for at least 10 years, and Adobe isn't going to leave their user base out in the cold.

The populated hexagon has 242 rings, so the world map can thereby accommodate 44287 cities.
Roster page 5127 has the first positive score at rank 41009 of 60711 which is percentile 32.45.
  • We have 407 fewer ranked players today
  • There are no new vacant cities on the 1 o'clock radial that I'm monitoring
  • MichelleLynn moved in to the previously vacant city sector at Ring 012, 1 o'clock
While it's obvious that the outer rings can accommodate more cities, the progression is not intuitive.
  • Each odd numbered ring will have 6 more relic sectors that the previous ring
  • Each even numbered ring will have 6 more relic sectors than the previous ring,
PLUS 6 more cities than the previous even ring.
  • If you do a bit of tricky math, and realize that a hexagon contains 6 equilateral triangles,
it follows that the even numbered rings will contain (6/2 times the ring number) city sectors.
    • Ring 004 will therefore accommodate 3 * 4 = 12 cities.
    • Ring 242 will therefore accommodate 3 * 242 = 726 cities

Love is more important than money.
Me, I'm fortunate. I love money.

And I do enjoy City Builders, because they're complex enough to be interesting.

neat, thanks for the tip on wheel zoom :)

as for hating the idea of allowing bots as neighbors, in favor of moving isolated cities toward the center of the map.

sure i'd luv to see all the active players be giving an opportunity to get the same resource (coin/trades) players toward the center of the map have, I just don't see that happening in the next 12 months.

I think dwarven bots are an option for those on the map edge, and those with cities stuck with main hall building for over 30+ days.

On the 1 o'clock radial that I'm monitoring, we have 1 new immigrant, in Ring 22, and 3 cities were vacated. Significantly, the vacated cites were in Rings 24, 28, & 32 which is CLOSER to the center of the map than yesterday's vacancies in Rings 58 & 60.

The implication is that these three players returned for a second session, but not a third session. This is actually VERY important because, as time goes one, the vacated cities will trend toward onesies and twosies that are sprinkled around the map, in which case the occasional vacant city will be a minor nuisance that won't have much impact on your buffing rotations.

Note that Shizuka is at the END of the current spiral, at about 5:30 in Ring 242. We don't know yet if Shizuka will EVER get any more neighbors, but for sure it will be a long, long time. The critical question is if Shizuka will EVER be moved toward the center of the map, and we won't know the answer to that question until some of Shizuka's neighbors start to age out.

There were no new immigrants today, on our monitored radial, 6 vacancies were carried over, and 2 more sectors were vacated at Ring 74 & 76.
Our population has been dropping right at 500 per day, so it's becoming apparent that there's a GLOBAL limit of 500 or so removals, and that the earlier throttling was merely because fewer than 500 cities had aged out.

Note that the outer rings contain more cities, so our 1 o'clock radial will be a smaller and smaller % sample size.

We had a new immigrant in Ring 32, 6 vacancies were carried forward, and the cities in Rings 82 & 84 were vacated.
There's nothing interesting in the middle of the map, so we've moved our reporting sample further out toward the edge of the map.

It seems "The Purge" has moved further out in the map... namely, to my neck of the woods.

At first, I thought it was a glitch or something -- I noticed empty grassy fields where a couple of my discovered neighbors used to be... and that's when I found this thread.

Since Monday afternoon, I've now lost 9 discovered neighbors around me, and I anticipate at least another 4-6 will be gone within a week or so, judging by their scores and lack of buildings.

While in limbo between non-players being removed and new players arriving, though, I will be losing tens of thousands of coins every 24 hours (just shy of 1/3 of my total discovered neighbors are gone at this point)... and since it seems that our server isn't gaining players as fast as the purge is propagating, it will probably be quite some time before I see any new neighbors moving in to my area of the map, to replace those I've lost.

(UPDATE: as of today (Thursday), another 6 discovered neighbors have been removed from my known area of the server... bringing my current total of 30 neighbors that I was visiting daily down to 15, with another 2 or 3 on the fringe of my discovered area possibly yet to be removed. Ouch... 1/2 of my daily visitation income has vanished.)
