How does population go in the negative?

My population was in the 500's , all of the sudden I'm negative 52? Then after upgrading housing I'm back up again. Yesterday it showed me as a negative 81? Now I'm back up to 871. I'll bet by the time I log in again I'll be in a negative again. It makes it a little impossible to upgrade if I keep loosing my population. lol. Could someone please fix me so I'm up where I'm supposed to be? Please? (871). TY

Yep,,,Logged back in and I'm down to 13?? Help!

This happens when you upgrade buildings and gain a positive increase instead of a deduction from your available population. Watch for a population increase when you upgrade buildings and when you see it, please start a production in your manufactory and the population will correct itself.

This issue will be fixed with update 1.18
