Middle of the map - locations?

No, being nearer the center will not mean your trades will be better (not directly). Everyone gets about 200 trading partners. Ones you haven't discovered yet, you have to pay a trader fee. But near the center, you have a good chance of being near some large, established cities who can help you with trades, and you are not on the edge, where half your map can be empty provinces with no cities in them to interact with besides collecting coins.

It does mean that you should be surrounded by mostly active players. Whether or not they use the trader is uncontrollable.
