Except mechanics of "random" was very different. The quests were more cycled than randomized - and over meaningful number of quests the aggregates followed very predictable pattern - which was the same for everyone. Not only that, but you knew your next quest with at worst 50% probability.
None of these features present in the current "random" approach.
And because of all the complaints about that system, we got this system instead.
