I don't know if I'll ever be a fan of emojis (OVER MY DEAD BODY), and the "XD" is one of the few old school letter-face combinations that doesn't automatically convert to a smilie, something that makes me twitch and scream at the sky in betrayal. People used to be quite creative about emoticons, working with what they had on the keyboard and coming up with cool designs, but that was never my forte. I use it for a wide variety of reasons, but mainly to show that I am laughing at myself and/or facepalming mentally.

Depends on emoticon definition. If the expanded unicode chart is the point of reference, then many non-facial symbols including pictures of food are included.

It's really not complex. If it isn't displaying an emotion, it isn't an emoticon.

If the distinction was kaomoji vs. emoji, I would understand the need of a technical breakdown. Emoticon and the mojis come from two different developments, and have distinct histories so that what has been included in each label does present unnecessary overlap, as the emoticon and emoji were not originally designed to be complementary categories.

That's all correct. And irrelevant. If an icon does not signify emotion, it isn't an emoticon, it's just an icon. We are not all required to understand things in order for them to be true. i.e., top posting vs bottom posting, which most of us don't understand or care about. It's still one of the longest-standing arguments on the internet.

Which should have been the point of comparison from the start. Icon versus emoticon, rather than emoji vs. emoticon. The problem is in the development of emoticons many things were included in under the emoticon label which were not truly emotions.

I spent my formative years in a place called Vietnam.....we didn't have any delphinium there.
